Microsoft Modern Desktop FAQs_

How do I licence my Modern Desktop?

There are different models which can provide licences for end users to use Windows 11. During our design process, we will be able to provide advice on which licences are required.

What should I consider when choosing between Windows 11, AVD and Windows 365?

Consider factors such as your organisation’s infrastructure, remote work needs, budget and security requirements.

Windows 11 is ideal for traditional desktop setups, AVD suits organisations needing flexible, scalable virtual environments and Windows 365 is great for a simple, cloud-based PC experience.

What is Infinity Group’s process for migrating to a Modern Desktop?

User profiling and user cases

Our process beings, if required, to work with your organisation to capture the current and future end user working scenarios and use cases. By understanding how end user needs and wants to work we can ensure there is a flexible solution available to them.

Design

In the design phase, the interim and future states of the IT environment are carefully planned. This involves designing the architecture for the new Windows 11 and modern desktop environment, including security, compliance, and governance frameworks. Detailed documentation is created, specifying configurations, user access controls, and device management policies. This ensures that all technical requirements are addressed and aligns with the strategic goals established earlier.

Build

During the build phase, the necessary services and infrastructure are set up according to the design specifications. This involves configuring Windows 11 and modern desktop services, setting up user accounts and permissions and establishing security protocols. Custom development may be required to support specific business needs or integrations with existing applications. For AVD and W365 we will deploy these cloud-based solutions and link then with Microsoft Endpoint Manager. We can then publish these services ready for end users to connect and consume.

Testing

Once the build phase is complete, thorough testing is conducted to ensure that all systems and services are functioning as expected. This includes validating data integrity, testing user access and permissions, and conducting security audits. Testing helps identify any issues or discrepancies that need to be addressed before the actual deployment. User acceptance testing (UAT) is also performed to ensure that the new environment meets the users’ needs and expectations.

Deployment

In the deployment phase, the actual device and software deployment takes place. This involves installing Windows 11 on eligible devices, enrolling them into the modern desktop platform, and ensuring that users can access the Microsoft 365 apps and data they need. The deployment plan is executed according to the established timelines, with careful monitoring to address any issues promptly.

Handover and user adoption

After successful deployment, the handover phase involves transferring ownership of the new environment to the organisation’s IT team. Comprehensive documentation is provided, detailing configurations, processes, and support information. Training sessions are conducted to ensure users are comfortable with the new system and can maximise its features. User adoption strategies are implemented to encourage engagement and utilisation of Windows 11 and modern desktop tools, ensuring a smooth transition and realisation of the anticipated benefits.

What is the difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11?

The primary differences between Windows 10 and Windows 11 lie in their user interface, features, and performance. Here’s a breakdown of the key distinctions:

  • Android App support: Windows 11 allows you to run Android apps directly through the Amazon Appstore.
  • Microsoft Teams integration: Windows 11 has deeper integration with Microsoft Teams, making it easier to communicate and collaborate.
  • Performance improvements: Windows 11 offers improved performance and responsiveness, especially on newer hardware.
  • Touch optimisation: Windows 11 is better optimized for touch-screen devices, making it more suitable for tablets and hybrid laptops.
  • New store: Windows 11 has a redesigned Microsoft Store with a cleaner and more intuitive interface.
  • Multiple desktops: You can create and manage multiple virtual desktops in Windows 11 to organise your work.
  • DirectStorage: Windows 11 supports DirectStorage, which can significantly improve load times for games and other applications.

Can I use these solutions together?

Yes, many organisations use a combination of these solutions to meet diverse needs. For example, Windows 11 can be used for on-premises desktops, while AVD or Windows 365 can be employed for remote or hybrid work scenarios.
